Astronaut Reveals Mental Health Struggle After ‘Tsunami of Harassment Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also included well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and astronaut training to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of victims of sexual violence.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the supporters whose support helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had resulted from the mission, including increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.

The group of women also included leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm established by a well-known tech mogul.
