Approximately fifty automobiles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the Germany's town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.

Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.

Officers report they were notified late on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.

The liquid had been drawn in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.

Police then discovered many other vandalized vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials say early analysis suggest the fluid was likely blood from a person.

"Currently there is no indication as to its source; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the occurrence," they added.

City officials stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for information.

An important political figure stated the attack rendered him speechless and needed to be addressed promptly.

"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, recalling the killing of nine victims by a gunman aiming at people of migrant background in five years prior.
